Privacy Policy
Yomify is built to do its core reading work on your Mac. This policy explains exactly what each permission enables, what stays local, and the limited cases where data leaves your device.
Your reading stays yours.
Local by default
Highlights, dictionary lookups, furigana, OCR, history, favorites, and flashcards stay on your Mac by default.
Online only when needed
Network requests are limited to translation you explicitly allow, sign-in, plans and trial licensing, payments, updates, downloads, and site delivery.
No data brokerage
Yomify does not sell personal data, run advertising SDKs, or use your reading history for targeted advertising.
From selection to meaning—on your Mac.
Yomify receives the selected text after your gesture.
Dictionary lookup, furigana, readings, and OCR run locally.
History and study data remain on-device unless you delete them.
If you allow cloud translation, only the highlighted text or dictionary gloss needed for that result is sent to Google's translation endpoint over HTTPS.
Scope and controller
This Privacy Policy applies to the Yomify macOS app, Yomify website and launch waitlist, account services, Free, Standard, Premium and trial licensing, payments, updates, and support communications.
Yomify is operated by Kuei Maesaka, an individual developer based in Tokyo, Japan, who is the controller of personal data described here. Questions and privacy requests can be sent to yomipet.app@gmail.com. The operator's full business address and telephone number are available before purchase through the request process in the Commercial Disclosure.
On-device reading data
Selected Japanese text, furigana, JMdict dictionary results, kanji readings, OCR output, history, favorites, and flashcards are processed locally on your Mac by default. Reading history, favorites, flashcard data, and the latest result are encrypted with Electron's macOS-backed secure storage when available. Preferences such as display choices and shortcuts are stored in local application data.
Yomify does not upload ordinary Live Highlight selections, Area Capture images, reading history, favorites, or flashcards to Yomify servers. Reading history is unavailable on Free, Standard shows the 20 most recent history entries, and Premium provides unlimited history.
Permissions and feature access
- Accessibility lets Live Highlight request selected text from the frontmost app.
- Input Monitoring lets the local selection watcher detect mouse selection gestures and key-down events used only to recognize selection, navigation, or Copy actions. Yomify does not retain a keystroke log.
- Automation lets Yomify ask macOS System Events, and compatible browsers where needed, for the active selection or a Copy fallback.
- Screen Recording is used only after you start Area Capture. Electron obtains an in-memory frame of the relevant display, immediately crops it to the rectangle you draw, and sends that crop to the bundled local OCR engine. Yomify does not save or upload the screen frame or cropped image as part of Area Capture.
Clipboard fallback
Some apps do not expose their selected text through macOS Accessibility. After an explicit selection gesture, Yomify may briefly request Copy, read the resulting text, and restore the previous clipboard contents where possible. This fallback is used to produce the reading result; Yomify does not maintain a separate clipboard history. A separate clipboard-manager app may independently observe the temporary Copy event under that app's own settings and privacy terms.
Optional online translation
Cloud translation is off until you explicitly allow it. If you choose an explanation language other than English or Japanese, the relevant English dictionary gloss is sent to Google's translation endpoint. If you enable the Translation result, the highlighted Japanese text may also be sent to produce that result. Requests use HTTPS.
Local English dictionary meanings, furigana, kanji readings, history, and OCR do not require this request. If the request fails or internet access is unavailable, Yomify keeps or falls back to the local dictionary result. To avoid translation requests, use English or Japanese explanations and keep Translation off.
Account data
Google sign-in is handled through Google OAuth and Supabase Auth. Supabase stores your user ID, email address, plan, trial dates, account and purchase status, and authentication records needed to keep you signed in and verify access. For Free accounts, Supabase also stores the date and count used to enforce the ten-highlights-per-JST-day allowance; the selected text is not included in that usage record.
Authentication tokens stored on your Mac are protected with Electron's macOS-backed secure storage when available. Yomify never receives your Google password and does not use Google account data for advertising.
Purchases
Stripe processes Yomify Standard, Premium, and Premium-upgrade payments. Stripe receives the payment and billing details required to complete the transaction; Yomify does not receive or store your complete card number. Yomify stores the product and amount purchased, Stripe customer, price, checkout and payment references, purchase status, and purchase, refund, or dispute timestamps so access can be activated, verified, refunded, and protected from duplicate processing.
Trial and paid device activation
The three-day Premium trial and paid plans are limited to one account and one active Mac. The app creates a random installation identifier locally. To stop an app deletion and reinstall from restarting the trial, public builds also keep a separate random, non-synchronizing, this-Mac-only identifier in macOS Keychain. That identifier is hashed on the Mac before transmission. Supabase stores only the SHA-256 hashes, a short device name derived from the Mac's hostname, activation status, and activation and last-seen timestamps. Yomify does not collect a hardware serial number. You can deactivate or move a paid plan to another Mac.
Launch waitlist
When you join the waitlist, Yomify stores the email address you enter, the signup source on this website, the time you consented and joined, your active or unsubscribed status, a random unsubscribe token, and whether the launch email was sent. This information is used only to manage the waitlist, notify you when Yomify launches, and deliver the promised 50%-off lifetime-license code.
Joining is optional and does not create an app account or require payment. Every waitlist email includes an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops future waitlist and launch messages; you may also request deletion by emailing yomipet.app@gmail.com.
Website analytics
While Yomify is in pre-launch, the website does not provide a public app download. Historical download-button and redirect records may remain for approximately 13 months from their collection date and contain only button source, artifact label, referring host, and timestamp.
To limit automated abuse without creating a visitor profile, a one-way hash derived from the Cloudflare-provided network address is retained only in a short-lived rate-limit counter and expires after the applicable window. It is not attached to a waitlist subscriber record. Yomify does not add raw IP addresses, browser user-agent strings, advertising identifiers, or tracking-cookie identifiers to the waitlist database. Cloudflare may process ordinary request metadata for delivery and security under its own terms.
Support communications
If you contact support, Yomify receives the information you choose to include, such as your email address, macOS version, Mac model, affected app, screenshots, and description of the issue. Do not send passwords, full card numbers, API keys, or unrelated sensitive material. Support messages are normally deleted or de-identified within 24 months after the request is closed unless a longer period is reasonably necessary for an active dispute, security investigation, or legal obligation.
How data is used and shared
Personal data is used only to operate the launch waitlist and send consented launch messages, provide Yomify, process optional translations, authenticate accounts, operate Free allowances, trials and paid-plan licensing, process payments and refunds, secure the service, deliver updates and downloads, measure product reliability, respond to support, and comply with law.
Yomify does not sell or rent personal data and does not share reading history for targeted advertising. Data is disclosed only to the service providers named below, when you direct it, when necessary to protect the service or users, or when legally required.
Service providers
Yomify relies on Resend for consented waitlist and launch-email delivery; Google for OAuth and optional translation; Supabase for authentication, plan, trial, quota, and device-entitlement data; Stripe for payments; and Cloudflare for website hosting, the waitlist database, downloads, security, and website operations. These providers may process data in countries outside your own under their respective privacy terms and lawful transfer mechanisms.
Legal bases
Where privacy law requires a legal basis, Yomify processes waitlist email data based on the consent you give when joining. Other data is processed to perform the service or contract you request, based on your choice to use optional features, for legitimate interests such as security, support, fraud prevention, and product reliability, and to comply with legal obligations. You may withdraw waitlist consent using the unsubscribe link and withdraw an optional app permission by revoking it in macOS, although the related feature may stop working.
Retention and deletion
Local history, favorites, flashcards, the latest result, and preferences remain on each Mac until you clear them or remove Yomify's local application data. Deleting the online account cannot erase local data from an offline or inaccessible Mac, so you should clear local data on each device you control.
Active waitlist records are kept until the launch notification and discount have been delivered, you unsubscribe, or the waitlist is discontinued. Unsubscribed addresses may be retained as a suppression record for up to 24 months so they are not accidentally re-emailed, unless earlier deletion is requested and no legal or security reason requires retention. Historical download analytics are automatically removed after approximately 13 months. Account, authentication, trial, daily-usage, and active-device records remain while needed to provide the account and license. Support records are normally deleted or de-identified within 24 months after closure. Transaction, refund, dispute, tax, and accounting records may be retained for the period required by law or reasonably necessary to establish or defend legal claims.
Data in active systems that is approved for deletion will normally be deleted or de-identified within 30 days after identity and intent are verified. Encrypted backup copies and provider systems may take longer to expire under their normal backup cycles and will not be restored for ordinary use.
How to delete your account
Email yomipet.app@gmail.com from the Google account used with Yomify and use the subject “Yomify account deletion.” We will acknowledge the request, may ask you to reauthenticate or provide limited information needed to verify ownership, and will confirm when processing is complete.
Confirmed account deletion removes or de-identifies the Supabase authentication profile, account email, plan and quota state, active-device associations, and other account data that is not required to be retained. It also ends account-linked trial and paid access and signs out connected installations. Before deletion is completed, we will explain this consequence and ask you to confirm. Legally retained payment records do not automatically recreate an account or entitlement.
You may instead sign out, deactivate a Mac, or clear local history without deleting the account. Account deletion requests are available to every user and are not limited to residents of a particular country.
Your choices and rights
You can unsubscribe from waitlist emails at any time, disable Live Highlight, avoid Area Capture, choose English or Japanese explanations and keep Translation off, revoke macOS permissions, clear local history, sign out, deactivate the current Mac, and stop using the service.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to be informed of processing purposes and security measures and to request access, disclosure, correction, addition, deletion, cessation of use, cessation of third-party provision, restriction, objection, or a portable copy of personal data, and to complain to a data-protection authority. Send requests to yomipet.app@gmail.com. We will explain the result or, where a request cannot lawfully be fulfilled, the reason. Identity may need to be verified before account data is disclosed, corrected, or deleted.
Security
Yomify limits collection, keeps reading data local by default, encrypts reading history and local authentication tokens with macOS-backed secure storage when available, hashes installation identifiers before server storage, uses encrypted network connections provided by its service partners, and restricts account records with authenticated access controls. No system is perfectly secure, so please report suspected security issues to the contact address above.
Changes
This policy may be updated when Yomify's features, providers, or legal obligations change. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new effective date and, where appropriate, communicated in the app or website. Earlier processing remains governed by the policy that applied at the time, subject to applicable law.
Contact
Questions, privacy requests, deletion requests, or security reports can be sent to yomipet.app@gmail.com. Please include enough information to identify the relevant account or request, but do not send passwords or complete payment-card details.
